GMDSS--A RADIO OFFICER'S VIEW
The author of this lengthy letter to the editor is a radio officer with many years of experience. He writes to offer his critical comments on the proposed Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), with particular reference to its requirements regarding radio equipment on board ships, etc. The grounds for his criticisms are that GMDSS is (a) a system based principally on satellites and radiotelephoney; (b) a system that seeks to remove the onboard communicator, i.e. the radio officer; and (c) a system that is far from having been proven capable of matching the effectiveness, reliability and simplicity of the 500 KHz distress frequency and the auto alarm system that it is proposed to replace.
