RECONSTRUCTION AND MODERNISATION OF ARGENTINA'S BAHIA BLANCA GRAIN EXPORT FACILITIES

Argentina expects to increase its agricultural exports to 25 million tons in 1990. To this end, a reconstruction of the country's grain export terminal of Ingeniero White at Bahia Blanca was begun in 1989. Most of the existing grain silos and elevators will undergo major renovation without shutting down operations. Various new facilities will be added, including an offshore berth, automated conveyor systems, offloading railroad yards, and advanced ship outloading systems. The modernization program will entail the installation of a computerized grain monitoring and control system, as well as a high speed, local area network for the grain control operators. Special consideration will be given to the prevention of dust explosions, a primary source of accidents peculiar to this type of grain terminal. The renovation project has eight well-defined construction stages that, when completed, will raise the grain handling capacity of Bahia Blanca's terminal to 19 million tons per year.
