POLISH YARDS ARE RELIANT ON INCREASED EFFICIENCY
Polish shipyards share a short-term requirement for hard currency for both investment and contracts. Until now heavily dependent upon Soviet orders, and expecting little in the way of government help, they are seeking joint ventures with foreign companies and orders from abroad. The speed with which they can react to the removal of guaranteed work and bureaucratic restraints will be critical to their prosperity, or even survival. Following an overview of these developments and of attempts to increase efficiency, the situation and outlook are outlined for each of Poland's major shipyards and for several smaller ones.
