NEW TWIST SKIMMERS

The 600 light-ton VALDEZ STAR, the largest skimmer vessel built in the U.S. for protecting coastal waters, is described. The heart of its skimming system is a simple device that has been in use for nearly 20 years, the Dynamic Incline Plane (DIP). The reason the DIP was chosen in lieu of any more-recently introduced device was the conviction that it cleans up oil better than any other device currently available, and has an excellent reliability record. The DIP and its operation are explained, and the design features of the VALDEZ STAR are described. The ship was built by Goudy and Stevens Shipyard in East Boothbay, Maine, for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company of Valdez, Alaska.
