VESSEL NAVIGATION PANEL SUMMARY REPORT
The Vessel Navigation Panel of the Ship of the Future--2000 Workshop begins its report with a description of the current state-of-the-art in vessel navigation. Despite the many advances to date, there are still numerous problems in current vessel navigation systems. The panel then looks at future vessel navigation systems and presents a conceptual navigation system diagram that shows a ship-wide local area network sharing a common database and integrating cargo, machinery, communications, training, and management functions. Sample layout designs of navigation systems for a tanker and a cruise ship are provided, showing control displays that are arranged to simplify and optimize human communication and navigation data interpretation. In order to prepare for these future technological advancements in vessel navigation, a list of recommendations is provided indicating specific areas of improvement and cooperative action by the concerned sectors of industry and government.
