EQUIPMENT SELECTION AND BRIDGE PLANNING

The point made in this article is that the selection and layout of navigating bridge equipment has largely been governed by traditional concepts and routine, and that change is called for. In an environment of reduced crews and the one-man bridge, bridge and instrument design cannot be treated separately, as they often are, from actual nautical procedures and standards of navigator training. It is emphasized, too, that autopilots can malfunction and that it is consequently essential to have a manual override instantly available.
