PROMOTING COMPETITION AND MARKET PERFORMANCE IN LINER SHIPPING
There is a trend toward market regulation in the policies set for liner shipping. In light of this trend, this paper explores ways in which competition and economic performance can be enhanced in the industry. The theory of contestable markets is used to segregate those market environment conditions that most strongly affect effective competition, and their implications for policy are examined. It is argued that the new policy trend is, in general, supported by the positive and normative perspective that is offered by the contestability theory.
