THE BATTELLE ANECHOIC TANK WITH HYDRODYNAMIC TEST SECTION FOR ACOUSTIC MEASUREMENTS
The present paper reports on the design, properties and applications of the anechoic tank at the Battelle-Institut e.V., Frankfurt am Main. This tank permits absolute hydroacoustic measurements in the frequency range between about 1 kHz and 100 hKz (a reflection loss of approximately 10 dB) and relative measurements for frequencies even below 1 kHz. An extension to this facility consists of a hydrodynamic test section for investigating the noise of cavitating propellers under acoustic free-field conditions. Examples of the potential applications of the facility are discussed.
