SOCIETIES SEEK WAYS TO ASSESS MANAGEMENT
Ship classification societies are investigating ways to formalize what constitutes a well-managed ship. The introduction by Det norske Veritas of the new Shipboard Management notation is discussed, and international activities toward achieving this same purpose are reviewed. The comments of top personnel at some of the major classification societies are presented and emphasize the inherent difficulty of defining parameters for people rather than machines.
