FUTURE SHIPS: RATIONALLY BASED STRUCTURAL DESIGN

This paper is intended to point out the many sophisticated tools, based on both experience and theoretical studies, that exist for the naval architect to use in the design of rationalized hull structures. It deals with ship types for which significant design developments are expected to occur shortly: oil tankers and products carriers, dry bulk carriers, liquefied gas carriers, chemical carriers, ro/ro ships, containerships, cruise ships, dredgers and icebreakers. The discussion of the development status of basic design procedures is divided into three parts that cover, respectively, preliminary design, overall structural design, and local structural design. Note is then made of the computer programs developed by Bureau Veritas and most other classification societies as tools for hydrodynamic and structural analysis. A section headed "Future Developments" is next presented, covering probabilistic structural design, the safety concept, and hull surveillance. Lastly, the author calls for research to develop rationally-based inspection procedures and acceptance criteria relating to the assessment of hull integrity.
