MATERIALS FOR WARSHIP APPLICATIONS--PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Some of the more important applications of materials in warships over the past 100 years are briefly reviewed, and future uses of a range of new materials now under development are discussed. This paper deals with materials usage in three areas: structures; propulsion units; and marine engineering systems. The development of specific materials for each of these application areas is traced, and prospects for the introduction of new materials based on recent research findings are considered. Materials discussed include advanced high-strength low-alloy steels, aluminum alloys, titanium, corrosion resistant alloys, engineering ceramics and metallic/non- metallic composites. designer.
