NO RED LIGHT FOR DRUG TRAFFIC AT SEA

Characteristics are identified for six basic categories of drugs: cannabis, opium and opiates, cocaine, hallucinogens, stimulants, and sedatives. Some of the ways in which these drugs are smuggled are described. Certain measures that shipping companies and crews can employ to counter drug trafficking are discussed. Despite such measures, however, drug smuggling has become a major problem for ship operators; they can all too easily become unintentionally embroiled in the illegal carriage of drugs concealed in cargo or elsewhere in their vessels.
