SHIFTING CARGOES
A discussion is presented of the hazards associated with the carriage of the dry bulk cargoes that now constitute a significant proportion of international seaborne trade. The categories into which these hazards can be grouped are: structural damage due to improper cargo distribution; the loss or reduction of stability during a voyage; and chemical reactions. Aspects covered include oxygen reduction, toxic fume emissions, self-heating, cargo liquefaction, cargo shifting, sloshing, and container losses from inadequate securing arrangements. The operating maxim recommended is: "Keep free surfaces to a minimum."
