COASTWISE COMMAND--THE MASTER'S BURDEN
The special problems faced by shipmasters commanding coastwise vessels are identified. The emphasis is on larger vessels plying the coast to several ports at the end of a long passage offshore. The problems can include the quality and quantity of sea staff; administrative paperwork; regulatory requirements and associated paperwork; vessel design and capabilities; and more. The easing of the Master's burden requires that operations be made more efficient, and the bulk of the article is devoted to suggestions as to how this might be accomplished.
