ANTI-FOULING COATINGS FOR ALUMINUM HULLS-- IS THERE LIFE AFTER ORGANOTIN?

Ever since the U.S. Coast Guard eliminated the use of organotin antifouling paint systems for aluminum hulls, the search has been on for a suitable substitute coating that would provide some measure of protection from fouling without the environmental costs associated with tin-based systems. This article discusses the status of the initiatives underway at Coast Guard Headquarters in this regard, and emphasizes the importance of centralized control of experiments with non-approved coating systems.
