RESPONSE TO HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS SPILLED AT SEA
A study was made of the experiences gathered in the use of existing oil-fighting equipment to counteract floating chemical substances. About 300 chemicals shipped over German waters were classified , and the physical properties that govern the spreading, dispersing, emulsifying, sinking, and separating processes of floaters were evaluated. Using data from oil spill containment actions, investigations revealed that most harmful chemicals are not only hardly detectable but they also form monomolecular films, making control measures impossible and prevention methods imperative. The evaluation, moreover, showed that chemical pollution-fighting vessels have to be constructed strictly according to the IMO/IBC- code, particularly for those parts exposed to the often highly corrosive chemicals.
