UNION JUPITER: DIRECT SHIPPING APPROACH CHALLENGES TRANSHIPMENT

The UNION JUPITER, a 3,222 dwt short-sea vessel is described. It is the largest delivery from Cochrane Shipbuilders in 18 years, and the first newbuilding for its owner, the Union Transport Group, from a UK shipyard. The direct shipping approach made possible by such a vessel means that a cargo can be carried directly from a location that is as near as possible to its point of origin, to the receiver, who may be inland. The advantage over cargo transshipment is that the cargo is not unnecessarily subjected to additional handling, exposure to the weather and possible damage. The length oa of the UNION JUPITER is 99.73m, main propulsion is by a MAN B&W Alpha 8L23/30D engine, speed is 11.5 knots, and laden draft is 4.27m.
