PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROPELLER DESIGN

The chief purpose of this paper is to analyze the experience gained during extensive use of the propeller design procedures of the Fincantieri Merchant Shipbuilding Division, Italy. Special attention is given the comparison between theoretical and practical results. Design conditions are discussed in relation to performance requirements, propulsion plant characteristics, noise and vibration characteristics, and ship operating profile. Such problems are discussed as those relating to tank trials allowances and their influence on design conditions, and data reconciliation differences that can arise from using more than one model basin. A detailed comparison between theoretical and model test results is carried out for 28 propellers.
