LIFEBOAT ANALYSIS SYSTEM (FOR MICROCOMPUTERS); SOFTWARE

The Lifeboat Analysis System (LAS) is a computer program to predict the launch behavior of the free-fall lifeboat. The free-fall lifeboat is quickly becoming a common lifesaving appliance on seagoing vessels and offshore facilities. The maritime authorities of most countries have accepted the free-fall concept and are in the process of developing design and certification criteria for these lifeboats. Within the LAS, the lifeboat is idealized as a three- dimensional rigid body. The shape of the lifeboat, its weight and inertial characteristics, and the free-fall height and launch angle are defined by the analyst. In the launch prediction model, the launch is assumed to occur in the vertical plane. The forces acting on the lifeboat as well as the displacements of the lifeboat all occur in this plane. Included in the launch prediction model is the capability to compute the global accelerations at any seat location so that an estimation of the potential for the occupants within the lifeboat to be injured during the free-fall launch can be determined.
