CHALLENGING THE OLD ORDER: TOWARDS NEW DIRECTIONS IN TRAFFIC SAFETY THEORY

Traffic safety--as defined by the editor--is a social configuration constructed of interrelating and overlapping disciplines. In this series of articles, international renowned scholars go beyond "driver, vehicle, and roadway" to examine the theoretical basis of traffic safety, thus elevating traffic safety research to a higher plane. This compilation is the result of a week-long Multiperspective Traffic Safety Conference in which experts from various disciplines debated issues of traffic safety. In five chapters, the authors address: 1) The Construction of the Accident Reality, 2) Institutional Reconstruction of the Accident, 3) Personal Reflection About Accident Involvement, 4) Philosophical and Ethical Pillars of Traffic Safety, and 5) A Multiperspective Framework.
