USE OF ACCELERATION SIGNATURES
The lateral and longitudinal accelerations of a vehicle during a journey depend on the route, the presence of other vehicles, the behavior of the driver and perhaps other factors such as the type of vehicle and the weather. Nowadays, it is relatively easy and inexpensive to measure and record vehicle accelerations but little research seems to have been carried out to investigate whether such measurements can be put to good use. This paper describes a particular form of measurement of vehicle accelerations called "signatures" because they may characterize the behavior of individual drivers. Measurements of the signatures of a small number of drivers have been made by the British Government's Transport Research Laboratory - the results are outlined.
