STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF RHAPPAHANOCK SHOALS REAR RANGE LIGHT
Rhappahanock Shoals Rear Range Tower is a 195.5 feet tall aid to navigation tower being built in the Chesapeake Bay. The square lattice tower will be constructed primarily of various size single and double angle members connected with A325 3/4 inch bolts. Tower members are to be made of ASTM A572, GR 50 steel for the lower corner posts and of ASTM A36 steel for all other members. The proposed tower is modeled by computer and analyzed in accordance with the provisions of the EIA/TIA STANDARD, Structural Standards for Steel Antenna Towers and Supporting Structures ANSI/EIA/TIA- 222-E-1991 (EIA Standard). The model is loaded separately with dead, 1/2 inch ice and wind loads. Two load combinations consisting of Dead + Wind and Dead + Ice + .75 Wind are analyzed. When all of the designer's assumptions are followed, our analysis shows that the structure meets the requirements of the EIA Standard, but only with use of a special code provision that permits increasing the allowable stresses by 33%. Based on the terms of the contract, it is recommended that the submittal be approved. The analysis of Rhappahanock Shoals Rear Range Tower is done for Civil Engineering Unit Cleveland.
