GIS-T IN TRANSIT PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

The purpose of this project was to contribute to the understanding of the potential uses of GIS-T (Geographic Information Systems in Transportation) for transit planning and management by: 1) reviewing the current GIS concepts affecting transit; 2) identifying transit planning and management applications that can be beneficial with the adaption to GIS; and 3) demonstrating how the different flow-control rules can be simulated within a GIS environment for transit planning and management. Transit agencies are still in their infancy with respect to exploring the power and possibilities offered by GIS technology. Studies on the use of GIS technology in highway planning and management have received a great deal of attention, while there has always been a neglect on the application of GIS in transit planning and management.
