THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD IN SUBSTRUCTURE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
The basic principles of the finite element method are set forth and the attributes of the method which are of particular advantages to substructure analysis are listed. The use of the method in geotechnics and the use of the elementary techniques in the general design office are discussed. Three sample analyses are outlined which use readily available finite element programs and linear elastic soil models. All three cases which relate to motorway structures, illustrate the simple plane strain elements, high order quadrilateral element, and high order 3-dimensional element.
