STANDARDIZATION OF INLAND WATERWAYS' DIMENSIONS

The main difficulties in the classification of inland waterways are that misunderstandings exist among different countries as to the classification of pushed units; that the current classifications do not take into account the recent evolution of the fleet (fluvio- maritime vessels, barges transported on seagoing vessels, large motor vessels); and that the classification adopted by the European Conference of Ministers of Transport does not apply to other continents. A Working Group of a Committee of the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses was given the mission of achieving progress on these questions. The results of its efforts are described and its conclusions presented. Basically, the program of work involved developing a multicontinent inventory of existing inland waterway classifications and of the divergences among them; making an inventory of the dimensions of the inland waterway fleet and seeking out the trends in its long-term evolution; and an examination of the technico-economic relationships between the dimensions of vessels and those of inland waterway structures (underkeel clearance, width and curvature of channels, headroom, and gage of locks).
