RISING COAL PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION: IMPLICATIONS FOR PORTS AND WATERWAYS

The comments in this presentation on the implications for U.S. ports and waterways of rising coal production and consumption focuses on the export market. It is predicted that the inland waterways can be expected to handle substantially higher tonnages of coal in the 1990s, tonnages that might require the annual movement of about 52,000 more barges than were moved in 1987.
