MWAY: A SYSTEM FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE IMPACT OF HIGHWAY SCHEMES ON URBAN AREAS
A computerized system has been set up which makes use of a data base to predict the quantifiable parameters associated with the environmental impact of road schemes. The data in the base describes urban features (buildings, streets) and possible alternative alignments of the proposed road. The data base may be used to estimate noise, visual intrusion, loss of sunlight and loss of daylight. The system could be written in such a way that it could be used in general situations. Details are outlined of the preprocessor which performs data handling, the noise estimation calculations, and the visula intrusion program which calculated the solid angle subtended at the receiver by the sky, ground, buildings and proposed road. The daylight program (calculates the daylight factor at receiver points inside notional rooms within dwelling units) and the sunlight program (calculates insulation of dwelling facades or gardens) are also outlined.
