INSTALLATION OF TEST PANELS OF ABLATIVE COPPER ANTIFOULING PAINTS ON BILGE KEELS OF USS BARNEY (DDG-6)

USS BARNEY entered dry-dock for its regular overhaul in October 1988, concluding a test period, initiated in June 1983, of bilge keel mounted antifouling (AF) paint test panels. The threaded stainless steel studs welded to the bilge keels of USS BARNEY for the previous test period were again used to secure eighty AF paint test panels, forty each on the port and starboard bilge keels. The panels comprised sixty-eight new panels exposed for the first time and twelve panels from the previous exposure. The coatings included: fourteen commercial copper ablative antifouling (AF) paints, one modified Navy standard copper vinyl AF paint, two wax AF coatings formulated for underwater application, and four aged coatings on panels retrieved from the previous test period.
