SOME ASPECTS OF TOLL SYSTEMS FOR MAJOR BRIDGES AND TUNNELS
The concept of toll financing and the objectives of toll collection are briefly examined, and the plaza layout of toll facilities is described. The Holland Tunnel plaza and the George Washington plaza are described, and recommendations are made concerning toll lane dimensions and surveillance and toll booth location. Comments are made on registration and recording equipment. Systems that may be in use in the future are briefly reviewed. These include the magnetic card system, and the free flow system in which vehicles can pass through a toll plaza without stopping or reducing speed; such systems will depend on automatic vehicle identification.
