THE MONITORING OF VEHICLE-GENERATED AIR POLLUTANTS
Tables and graphs are presented and the results are discussed of monitoring levels of exhaust emissions. The figures show that such emissions are dependent on many factors and the petrol and diesel engine emissions are quite different. The air/fuel ratio substantially affects emissions from petrol engines as also does the driving mode and spark timing. Secondary air pollutants formed in atmospheric reactions involving oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons, include aldehyde, nitrates and ozone. Details are briefly outlined of hydrocarbon, Carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides measurement. Determination of specific hydrocarbons at low concentrations and the measurement of particulate and organic lead in air are also detailed.
