A GENERAL DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL AND SOME APPLICATIONS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

A system is described (which is based on the demands made on a general digital terrain model), which uses flexible methods of data acquisition to obtain the heights of a close-meshed, rectangular grid (Digital Terrain Model, DTM). This DTM may be used to interpolate contours, to derive profiles, to compute volume changes after earth movement and to derive slope maps. The theory of the computation (which produces the heights of the terrain) is set forth, the program is briefly summarized and the several possible applications of the DTM in road construction are described.
