ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS - NOISE AND VISUAL INTRUSION
Some "shorthand" techniques are described for the quantification of noise and visual intrusion, which have been applied to strategic and route selection studies. Noise prediction methods applied at each stage of the planning process are discussed. Such techniques differentiate between source noise and noise between source and receiver, as well as between freely flowing traffic and that which is interupted or congested. Noise attenuation and noise prediction aspects are discussed, and two charts are presented which may be used to determine the source noise level - one for free flow and the other for non-free flow conditions. The main forms of visual effects are categorized. A simple quantification of the visual intrusion, the measurement of the solid angle, and the position factor in human vision are also discussed.
