DESIGN FLOW STANDARDS

The background to the new design flow standards for motorways and rural all-purpose roads, the factors taken into account in formulating the criteria, and their application in future road schemes are outlined. The main factors which govern road layout are forecasts of traffic flow and assesment of traffic flow which each category of road will carry. The 'capacity' of a road is defined and discussed. Standards for rural motorways are discribed. Factors which decide design flow standards are: operating speeds, safety, driver comfort, wet conditions, rain or darkness, road maintenance, break down and accidents, and accesses and junctions.
