CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF ADHESION IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETES DETERIORATING ACTION OF WATER
CONTIRBUCION AL ESTUDIO DE LA ADHERENCIA EN CONCRETOS ASFALTCOS. ACCION DETERIORANTE DEL AGUA
This report presents results of a study of the combined action of water and traffic on the asphalt concrete used in the pavements of rosario city. The problem investigated was the permanent presence of water under the surface due to A disintigration of the latter resulting from lack of adhesion between asphalt and aggregates. The aims of the study were: a) to carry out laboratory tests for investigating the phenomenon. B) to determine the degree of improvement produced by incorporating different percentages of additives. A series of conventional tests (permanent stability, compression-immersion, wheel tracking tests, etc) were conducted on mixes without additives and with different percentages of additives in the laboratory and in the field. The results indicated that none of the tests were satisfactory. Non-destructive techniques were then used (ultrasonic pulse, resonance) to study the prolonged deteriorating effect of the water. The tests were carried out in the laboratory and in the field on samples with a high percentage of voids and various percentages of admixtures. It is concluded that special consideration should be given to the adhesion problem in asphaltic concrete urban pavements. /TRRL/
