TUNNELLING IN ROCK. CHAPTER 10: MEASURING THE STRESS IN ROCK MASSES

Chapter 10 describes the types of stress which occur in rock masses, the principles of stress measurement, "doorstopper" equipment, including the in situ technique for use with A "doorstopper", the triaxial strain cell, including expressions relating the measured strain relief to the tensor components and details of the in situ technique for use with a triaxial strain cell, and input data and checks, including checks on cores containing strain cells. Finally mention is made of practical difficulties which may occur in stress measurement, associated with the preparation of borehole and strain gauges, the glues, short circuits in the electrical wiring, overcoring, and accuracy of the equipment. /TRRL/
