TUNNELLING IN ROCK. CHAPTER 4: SITE EXPLORATION IN TUNNELLING PROSPECTS
Chapter 4, which is the first of two dealing with site exploration, outlines the planning of site exploration and describes two types of site investigation: drilling investigation and joint survey. The purpose of a drilling exploration is (1) to confirm the geological interpretations and thus confirm the best route alignment and position of portals; (2) to examine the cores to determine the quality of the rock mass, i.e. homogeneity and fracturing, from which other deductions can be made; (3) to obtain hydrological information; and (4) to obtain cores for rock mechanics testing and petrographic studies. The purpose of a joint survey is to investigate the features of the rock mass, especially the smaller discontinuities such as naturally occurring joints. Data are also collected on foliations, lineations and bedding orientations in order to establish the geological structure of the rock mass. /TRRL/
