ECONOMIC FACTORS IN TRANSPORTATION OF FOREST PRODUCTS IN BULK

The distribution of forest products in bulk must be viewed as a logistics system comprising all activities and facilities from production through to final consumption. Three of the main physical components of the system - product, vessel, terminal - are discussed with particular emphasis upon the vessel. Vessel configuration and characteristics are related to forest products characteristics and constraints of ports and canals. Relationships between the cost of transporting forest products and service speed, vessel deadweight and return cargo market level are developed for three voyage patterns. Several methods of transferring cargo between ship and shore and the trade-offs between multi-port and central port load/discharge are described. The impact upon system design, with particular reference to the vessel, of external economic factors is discussed and some developing trends outlined.
