PRE-PLANNED PURCHASES OF SPARE PARTS SAVE TIME AND MONEY
The international nature of shipping makes it inevitable that ships requiring spare parts will not always be in a part of the world where stocks are held. The bulk of this article is devoted to describing a new service being made available to the marine industry to speedily locate the needed parts. The service is operated by Inventory Locator Service, Memphis, Tennessee. It involves the maintenance of a database in which vendors worldwide list up-to-date inventories of spare parts that they can supply and that can be queried online by a potential customer via a personal computer, modem and telephone link. The balance of the article tells how ship repair yards have become so inundated with work that it is in the best interests of shipowners and operators to book drydocking on a pre-planned basis.
