MACHINERY TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES BETTER ALTERNATIVES
An experiment conducted by Wartsila Diesel, in cooperation with other companies, to devise a more economical engine plant for an existing bulk carrier is discussed. Critical changes to the ship's plant were: use of a heat recovery system and power turbine to improve main engine economy; minimization of electricity consumption by using two-speed motors and by combining auxiliary functions; reduction of steam consumption by locating HOF deep tanks adjacent to the engine room; and the burning of sludge and solid waste in an oil-fired boiler, with a reduction in total fuel consumption. The study was carried out using a Panamax bulk carrier carrying coal from Australia to Europe. The study considered a number of alternative engine layouts.
