MARINE MAGNETRONS--40 YEARS (PLUS) ON
While electronic vacuum tubes have been replaced by solid state devices in the majority of their original applications, all ships' navigation radars still use magnetrons as their source of microwave power. These are electronic vacuum tube oscillators that convert high energy electrical pulses into pulses of microwave radiation. Based on information from EEV, one of the world's leading manufacturers of magnetrons, this article discusses the history of magnetrons, the reasons behind their continued use, how they have been developed in the past, and how they are likely to develop in the future.
