DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE SAN CLEMENTE CLASS TANKER
The San Clemente Class Tankers are 91,800 DWT Panamax double-bottom crude oil carriers designed and marketed in early response to the new incentives of the 1970 Merchant Marine Act. National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. is engaged in construction of 13 ships of this type and 8 more are on order at Todd Shipyards Corp., under license from NASSCO. The ships were designed for high producibility, using Automated steel handling equipment and mechanized fabrication processes. The propulsion plant consists of conventional state-of-the-art steam machinery with a fixed- pitch propeller. This paper presents a general description of the ship and the ship systems, with particular attention to segregated ballast and pollution abatement features. In an Appendix, it is shown that the effect of adding a double bottom is an increase in steel weight of 3 1/2%, and an increase in ship cost of under 2%.
