COMBINED DIESEL/ELECTRIC AND GAS TURBINE SYSTEM POWERS NEW FRIGATE
The combined diesel electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) system that powers HMS NORFOLK, the first of the British Navy's Type 23 frigates, is described and a schematic drawing shown. The CODLAG propulsion system eliminates the gearbox for low speed operation and astern maneuvering. It was chosen to satisfy requirements for a ship that could operate quietly at low speed but that also had high speed capabilities.
