FUEL SAVINGS AND COURSE CONTROL

Added resistance due to yawing and use of the rudder can be minimized by using a controller. To assess the performance of such a controller, only a few performance indices have been developed. In the present work, a mathematical model consisting of the nonlinear equations of maneuvering motion has been chosen. Concepts of wake variation, thrust variation and flow velocity past the rudder are used in the model. Time-domain simulation has been carried out for a 190,000 dwt tanker that is dynamically unstable. Subsequently, the simulation model is coupled with an optimization routine. Results show how the close relationship between rudder drag, yawing drag and performance indices changed with the adjustment of the controller parameters. Comparison of the performance of these indices with that of the most recent work has also been demonstrated. The most striking feature of the study is the contrast between adjustments of the controller for fuel saving and course control.
