INTEGRATED LOGISTICS SUPPORT--A CANADIAN APPROACH

The concepts and technology of Integrated Logistic Support (ILS), as practiced in North America, stem from a U.S. Department of Defense directive of several years ago. As required by this directive, logistic supportability is considered as a principal design parameter equal in importance to cost, technical performance and scheduling. Logistic support resources are developed, acquired, tested and deployed as an integrated part of the equipment acquisition process. The prime tool employed in ILS is Logistic Support Analysis (LSA), as described in MIL-STD-1388-1A. A companion document, MIL-STD-1388-2A, sets forth procedures for handling the masses of data flowing from the LSA process. This data is kept in the resultant database, the Logistic Support Analysis Record (LSAR). The challenge for Canadian industry is to develop an approach to ILS that will satisfy Canadian requirements. This paper provides a Canadian solution and describes the set of guidance documents developed to meet Canadian needs.
