DUAL PURPOSE TRAINING OF MARINE OFFICERS IN CANADA
This paper discusses the possibility of changes in the approach to improve the recruitment, education, and training of the Canadian Merchant Marine. The focus of education should be designed with the specific sector in mind and should allow for flexibility in direction. Training should include courses in safety, basic equipment operation, ship handling, carriage of goods and passengers, shipboard management and commercial management. These may be offered as front-end education followed by post-graduate studies, with the purpose of encouraging the student into the profession, at the same time providing him with post-sea employment orientation. This program will enable the Canadian marine industry to counteract the foreseeable problems in ship manning and economic viability in the years to come.
