PARAMETRIC EVALUATION OF BOILER CAPACITY
Evaluations of boiler capacity become very important in the course of the thermal and engineering trials of a propulsion plant after it is built, and after completion of yard or on-voyage repairs to a ship. The four methods generally used to conduct trials of a boiler's capacity are respectively based on: consumption of the water fed to the boiler; the boiler's heat balance; the position of the feedwater regulating valve and the water pressure drop at the valve; and use of a throttle to directly measure steam consumption. It is explained why there are shortcomings to all four of these methods. An alternate approach is proposed that makes it possible to evaluate boiler capacity from the performance parameters of the boiler. The proposed method is accurate enough for practical trial purposes and requires no additional installation of special gages or devices.
