STRENGTH OF FAST CARGO SHIPS
The trend towards high-speed cargo ships has resulted in vessels of fine underwater form and considerable flare. Certain of these ships have experienced structural damage to the deck and side shell early in their service life. The author examines the mechanism producing the damage and indicates the basis for Lloyd's Register of Shipping's interim proposals (which are now being applied) for signalling the likelihood of such damage at the design stage and taking remedial measures at that stage. Further investigation is required to arrive at a rigorous solution of the problems of fluid dynamics at the fore end of these ships. The phenomenon is also a function of ship handling.
