ALTERNATIVES TO CFCS: PHASEOUT WITH PROBLEMS
The chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are long time workhorses in many applications. As refrigerants, for example, they are nearly ideal working fluids. Controversy has arisen over their use, however, because of the threat they pose to the environment. This article looks at the hazard they create, at what substitutes appear promising and at what measures can be taken to ease the changeover.
