MATERIALS SELECTION AND R&D PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS
This paper, the second in a series, details the considerations underlying the choice of the materials examined and the test conditions to which they were subjected in a project on the development of new materials and coatings for exhaust valves in diesel engines burning very impure residual fuel. The materials comprised four broad classes: alloys; hardfacing materials; coatings; and one monolithic ceramic material. The factors underlying the choice of test conditions and material compositions are discussed and detailed results of all tests are given in subsequent papers in this series.
