REVIEW OF THE 80S: THE TREND TOWARDS POWER SYSTEM INTEGRATION
The 1980s are characterized as a decade of impressive progress in marine engineering for merchant ships--in fact, as arguably the most significant period since the 1920s, when the diesel engine forged the foundation of its current supremacy in propulsion and auxiliary power markets. The extended shipping depression and oil crisis forced a focus, in the 1980s, on overall operational economy. The sections of this review article, describing the achievements of the decade, are headed: Longer strokes; Narrowing the gap; Unifuel became common; Total energy concepts; Enhanced reliability; and Emission controls.
